Van Life News – Issue 02

ANY VAN, ANY CONVERSION.

Choices

The choices for van conversions can be overwhelming, countless interior and exterior styling decisions based on the intended use of your vehicle and comfort levels required. Considerations of how many people and animals will inhabit it during your adventures. And then the all important budget constraints that enforce some limitations and the desire to get value for money. Our passion is to help you make those all important decisions to match your budget and make a van perfect for you.

In our posts we plan to share insights into the world of van conversions, materials, design ideas, and examples of our work. Maybe you will use someone else for your van conversion, we really don’t mind, whatever you decide have fun and welcome to van life.

Lets be honest not much has been normal about the last 18 months but thankfully the UK appears to be heading in the right direction with the lockdown restrictions coming to an end. In the world of vans this is great news for us and our customers, overseas holidays do not look as easy as in the past and demand for oversea holidays when they do arrive will likely significantly increase prices. For the enlightened using your camper van to explore the incredible British countryside has never been more compelling, reduced carbon footprint, lower holiday costs and complete freedom to explore on your doorstep with your mini hotel on wheels.

At Advanced Auto Conversions we have never been busier, the demand for conversions has been dominated as expected by VW’s but we have converted many others including Ford Transit Custom, Toyota Granviar, Iveco, Vauxhall, plus others. Materials supply has come under pressure in the early months of 2021 affecting lead times for various products including seat materials, roofs and special fixings, some of this is caused by increased demand and post brexit challenges in the supply of some products from Europe. Whatever the cause we push hard for our customers to provide the fastest turnaround and get you out with your new van.

Materials Insight

Skyline Roof – Without doubt fitting a pop top roof increases the versatility of the space you have for day time use and additional accommodation, we use the full range of poptop roofs to suit budgets, lead times and design preferences. I think without doubt the Skyline Roof is up there with the best and available with a multitude of options, the low profile designs increase the height by as little as 70mm. The Skyline has excellent heavy duty canvas materials available in almost any colour and innovative locking and lifting mechanisms making it a premium choice.

When investing in a camper van conversion never be afraid to ask about the type of roof fitted and installer approval, its a big investment that needs to be right. Advanced Auto Conversions are approved fitters of Austops, Drive Lodge, Westdub, and Skyline, these are well established and from our experience high quality roof systems. Other excellent alternatives exist which we are happy to discuss.

Conversion of the Month – VW T6 Full Camper Conversion

If you follow our Facebook you will see all of our conversions as they happen, during March / April we converted various vehicles, a horse box, a Toyota Granviar, Ford Transit custom and another stunning VW T6 conversion. The materials used in this conversion are right on point giving this vehicle a modern whilst sophisticated and luxurious feel. The warm plum wood with a high gloss lacquer finish is a beautiful material, which is complemented with reupholstered combination brown leather seats in a Bentley stitch style. The vehicle was fitted with a rock and roll bed and appliances including a Dometic CRX50 refrigerator, a Cello 16inch Flat Screen TV and a Smeg 9222 Combi Sink, the pop top roof was from Westdub and further benefited from a side mounted awning.

Gadgets Products / Appliances

With so many options out there its always interesting to look at something new and different, Mick the owner is a gadget person so does not need much encouragement to geek out every now and then.  As with most conversions efficient use of space is a key objective.

So how about a motorised socket tower? Complete with USB connections, and even a QI phone charger on the top all packaged in a compact tube that closes away at the touch of a button when finished. They are not cheap at circa £500 for a 2 socket unit but if you want to save space and impress its hard to do better.

Another excellent space saving device is an electric projector screen which when combined with a Nebula Coke can sized LED projector means you have ready TV and Film with limited impact to living space. A entry level nebula is priced around £250-300 and a projector screen £100-£150 + fitting.
